Municipalities should bolster programs that promote safe housing minimum standards and related legal requirements. A safe home should be free of lead paint, mold, and other health hazards. A safe home should meet the accessibility needs of the resident(s). Living in a safe home should be an expectation met by rental unit landlords and should not be a cost burden to homeowners. Additional funding will be needed to ensure needed upgrades are available to residents of all incomes. For additional tools on the role of building contractors and developers in programs to provide safe homes and other needed improvements (such as weatherization), see Keys to the Valley Strategy C2.1 Provide local programmatic support and contractor training/education (part of Action Area C – Sustain Existing Primary Homes)
