Municipal officials and housing developers should be aware of and seek to meet identified needs for accessible homes, as well as fulfill all applicable federal housing accessibility requirements, such as: 

  • Privately-owned or publicly-assisted housing of four or more units per Fair Housing Act.  See the Fair Housing Act Accessibility Guidelines   
  • At least 1 unit or 5% of the dwelling units in federally-assisted housing developments of five or more units must be accessible in accordance with the Uniform Federal Accessibility Standards   
  • Housing provided by public entities and public and common use areas in housing developments need to be accessible per the Americans with Disabilities Act of 1990.
