Local and state regulations have a significant influence on the feasibility of operating public sewer systems. To make these systems more affordable, the following should be considered:
- Educate municipal officials about the need to update zoning density standards to better encourage housing and village revitalization.
- Update local zoning dimensional standards (i.e., minimum lot size, setbacks, maximum density, lot coverage) to reflect the existing built patterns and local planning goals.
- Require that municipalities allow multifamily homes in areas served by local water and sewer.
